November 25 On my way to P1 CheckClear for take off!
Sortie 122 - Circuit Solo
Sortie 122s is a circuit solo sortie and was done on 06/11/2007. Take off time was 09:30 hrs and flight time was an hr. Just a normal circuit session, nothing interesting also.
Sortie 119, 116A, 119A - Dual GH Solo Check
Was scheduled to fly Sortie 119 GH check on 07/11/2007. Sortie 119 was a total disaster for me. i was complacent and didn't get the procedures correct and almost busted into controlled airspace. Failed the sortie immediately...pathetic. was made to go back to do my sortie 116 with my Grade 3 instructor before attempting 119A with my Senior Instructor again. so i did my 116A on 08/11/2007 before going back to do 119A on 12/11/2007 which i managed to clear on the second attempt. Clear for Solo GH sorties!
Sortie 120 & Sortie 121 - GH Solo
First time going into the training area alone. Just did simple stuff like normal turns...a couple of steep turns and get use to flying around in the training area alone. Quite fun and the workload compared to flying in the circuits is lesser. Sortie 121, my second solo GH sortie. slightly more comfortable with flying alone in the training area, so managed to do a couple of PFLs and steep turns before making my way back to Jandakot Airport.
Sortie 123 & Sortie 123A- Circuit Dual
My P1 check are drawing near. Sortie 123 was suppose to be my last dual circuit flight with my instructor. but my instructor decided to alpha my sortie 123 becoz he felt that i needed more practise on my landing as i still have a tendency to land too flat resulting in a hard landing.
Sortie 124, 127 - More solo Flights
After completing sortie 123, i carried on and booked myself in for sortie 124 (circuit solo) and 127 (GH solo). Nothing special...just fly and clock my hrs for my P1 check.
Sortie 126, 126A, 111A
Sortie 126 is designed as a Pre P1 check sortie. which is to say, by this time, i should be up to P1 check standard. But unfortunately, that's not the case. i have to do sortie 126A and there after, another hr worth of circuit dual (sortie 111A) becoz my instructor felt that i wasn't ready for P1 check yet. But having flown all these sorties, my instructor finally believe that i am up to P1 check standard and decided to recommend me for P1 check. Phewww...
Sortie 125, 128, 129 - Solo Flights
In order to sign up for P1 check, i have to complete all my remaining solo sorties which were 125 circuits, 129 circuits and 128 GH. So...over the weekend, i planned myself in for all 3 flights and the weather was kind enough for me to fly all 3 of them. heh...P1 check here i come!
Signing out~ November 13 Sortie 119, Sortie 116A and Sortie 119A - GH Solo checkSometime last week, i was put up for Sortie 119. Sortie 119 is GH solo check, whereby the instructor will assess you on the outbound and inbound procedures. Whether you can go out to the training area and back safely without infringing into control airspace is vito to pass this sortie.
For the benefit of those who doesn't have ant idea how the flights are categorised, here's a list of flights that we do here in Jandakot:
Up to this stage, i can only do solo circuit flights and clearing sortie 119 will allow me to fly GH solo flights. But guess wat, i screwed up big time for my Sortie 119. When going outbound from Jandakot airport, i almost entered control airspace coz i initiated a climb to 3500ft before water ski park. Immediately my instructor asked me wat's the height that i am suppose to climb to. Instead of giving the correct height of 2500ft, i gave 3500ft. Busted...totally...the instructor took control of the aircraft and failed my sortie immediately. haiz...then i was told to go back to do my sortie 116A. haiz...sad day... So i put myself up for sortie 116A with my grade 3 instructor. The flight was oki...pretty fun. Did a couple of stalls, unusual attitude recovery and PFLs. PFLs still need to be brushed up...abit lost when my instructor pulled the aircraft throttle to simulated engine failure. On Monday 12/11/2007, i was put up for sortie 119A again with the Senior Instructor. Keeping fingers crossed...i went out to the training area and back. The horrible thing tat i heard over the ATIS when doing inbound was that the cross wind was max at 22kts and i was only rated for max 10kts of cross wind landing. luckily, i have the SI sitting on my right...hahaha...landed. passed...finally, cleared to do my GH solo flights! Signing out~ November 05 Red Bull Air Race 2007 - Final LeagueThe final league of the Red Bull Air Race 2007 was held over in Perth City, Western Australia. Saturday (03102007) was the qualifying round and Sunday was the actual race day.
The battle of the overall race leader for season 2007 was between Paul Bonhomme and Mike Mangold. Paul Bonhomme had been consistent throughout the season and was leading the race with 45 championship pts and following closely behind him was Mike Mangold with 43 pts. A 2 point margin separated the top 2 pilots. That would mean that the fate of who would be crowned the overall champion for 2007 season was yet to be determined.
Michael Goulian in his take off roll
Hungary’s verteran pilot, Peter Besenyei came in first for the qualifying round, while Mike Mangold and Paul Bonhomme came in 3rd and 5th respectively. The actual race day saw 12 remaining top pilots going head on with one another fighting for the last 8 spots in the quarterfinals.
The much anticipated head on between Mike Mangold and Paul Bonhomme couldn't had happened earlier. The battle between the 2 pt leaders took place during the quarterfinals which saw Mike Mangold edged out Paul Bonhomme. That tipped the overall championship to Mike Mangold as finishing in the top 3 will be enough to overtake P. Bonhomme.
The final league for the Red Bull Air Race saw some unusual faces for the finals. It was the battle between N. Ivanoff and M. Goulian as both pilots managed to edge out M. Mangold and A. Maclean respectively.
The day's winner was N. Ivanoff and a twist of fate saw M. Mangold crowned the overall champion for season 2007. For more detailed happenings, please visit the official website of the Red Bull Air Race.
