June 29 Day for me to leave JandakotApril 14 Cessna Citation Mustang comes to JDKThe Cessna Citation Mustang arrived at Jandakot training base yesterday. The plane is kinda small but it sure looks impressive and smart. It's classified as VLJ (Very Light Jet) and is approved for single-pilot operation. But i still prefer the Learjet 45...more sexy...ha~ Here's some pics that i managed to take over the late afternoon.

Oki this is just me~
Signing out~ April 03 Overfly Jandakot Airport and Perth Int. AirportSometime back in Phase 3, i had the chance of paxing a baron navigation flight down to Busselton and Perth International Airport. Armed with LP's canon powershot camera, here's wat i managed to capture during the flight.
Jandakot Airport
Perth International Airport
South Perth
Perth Skyline at 1500ft
Swan River
Signing out~ March 02 Learjet 45 in YPJTHaving outstationed over here in Perth for the past 8mths, finally the learjet arrived at Jandakot Airport. First time seeing the real learjet right in front of me...thinking that i will have the chance of piloting one in the coming year is simply unbelievable.
Slim, nicely curved, powerful, here's the learjet for you:

Signing out~ Sortie 187 - Albany TripComing to 2 mths since i entered Phase 3 of my training over here in Jandakot, WA. In order for us to qualify for our CPL IR license, sortie 187 is specially catered into our training program.
Sortie 187 requires us to take off from Jandakot Airport, navigate and make a full stop landing at Albany airport (about 2 hrs worth of air time on a cessna 172). Refill the aircraft, fly to Bunbury airport for circuit before navigating back to Jandakot. All in all, the sortie will take up about 5 hrs of air time thru and back.
Here's wat i got from sortie 187:

Signing out~ February 13 Sortie 191 - Navigation down Margaret RiverAmong all the solo navigation flights, Sortie 191 is the most highly anticipated flight. The route for Sortie 191 brings us down to the most South Westerly point of the Australia continent passing by Margaret River. So here's wat i captured on my route down South.
Performance of my cockpit when going down South
Maintaining 5500ft, 16 degree, cool weather.
Overflying Peel Inlet, Mandurah
My first waypoint was down to Bunbury and Peel Inlet, Mandurah is along my track.
Bunbury Town
Huge town...my first waypoint down to Margaret River.
Near Busselton
Coming near to Busselton, managed to capture some really interesting shots.
Busselton Jetty
The view of Busselton Jetty from 5500ft above the ground. It just looks extremely long doesn't it? haha...it's about 2km out into the ocean.
On track down to Margaret River
Extreme end of the picture is the western most tip of South Western, Australia where you can find lighthouse Cape Naturaliste.
Cape Leeuwin
Above 2 pictures marked the turning point of my navigation down south. Cape Leeuwin is the southern most tip of Western Australia. Wat a sight!
Signing out~ February 02 View from 3500ft above the Ground2 weeks into Phase 3. Haven't really flew my dual flights yet. Have been flying my solo flights. After doing many cross country flights, here's wat i see high in the sky.
Peel Inlet, Mandurah
Located at the southern tip of our training area. One of the waypoints tat we often overfly before turning Eastwards during our cross country flights.
Thunderstorm! Keep clear
View of a developing thunderstorm at 2500ft. Not something tat we will want to fly into. Photo was taken by LP during his navigation flight. He was forced to divert back to Jandakot airport due to the thunderstorm developing.
Yenyening Lakes
Yenyening Lakes is our "best friend" when we go for our cross country flights. It can be seen 20nm out on a good visibility day.
Cockpit Performance
Cockpit performance. It was pretty turbulent when i was taking this photo. So as you can see...the performance of the aircraft was haywire. 500ft per min descend rate by my power was at 2200rpm. I was suppose to maintain 3500ft...hahaha...my bad!
Errmmm...yah..me~
hahaha...this pic no need to explain. Tat's just me~
Signing out~ January 20 Phase 2 - 42 daysPhase 1 of my training was a disaster. I had to repeat almost every dual flights that i did. In fact...i had to repeat to the extent that i took a full 1 mth to clear 1 sortie! kinda ridiculous but that's how bad my Phase 1 was. Without saying...Phase 1 lasted 4 and half mths before i eventually managed to scrap pass my P1 check flight. Crap...
Phase 2 started immediately after i cleared my check flight on 8th dec 07. Phase 2 is the stage where we embark on visual flight navigation and consist of flight sorties; sortie 131 to sortie 160.
The pace in phase 2 is pretty much set by each individual. Getting an instructor that is free to fly your dual nav sorties pretty much means that, the faster you clear your solo sorties, the faster you will be able to sign up for P2 check flight. I was lucky to be in this position and flew as hard and as much as i could (which pretty much explains why my blog came to a stand still for the past month).
26 days was the duration that i took to clear my P2 flights. But something that i couldn't control was the P2 check flight queue. I was put on the waiting list for 2 weeks 2 days before i eventually cleared my check flight (and that includes the 2 days that i had no choice but to cancel the check flight due to unforseen circumstances).
Half way left to go! P3 here i come!
VH-BZV - My P2 Check aircraft
Signing out~ December 09 Phase 1 Check Flight - Sortie 130Our flight training here in Jandakot before we will be given our CPL (IR) license consist of 4 phases. After each phase, there will be a progress check flight to ensure that we are up to the standards that the college expect of us.
After waiting for 13 days, i finally got my P1 check flight! The last time i last flown a circuit sortie was 13 days back. So i was feeling kinda stressed up over whether i will be able to pass my P1 check on my first attempt.
The flight took off 111400hrs LMT. Duration of the flight was set for 1 and half hrs; which is broken into 1hr worth of GH and 30mins worth of circuit. Basically, the check flight will require cadets to perform all the flying stuff that we have learned from the past 29 sorties.
The flight started off oki...a few hiccups when i did my steep turns and stalling. PFL planning wasn't the smoothest that i have done as i made the wrong call with regards to my landing direction. Luckily i was able to fix up the error when at 1500ft. When i rejoin back to the aerodrome for circuits, the traffic was HORRIBLE! I was following another aircraft that was flying a circuit pattern of his own! extremely wide and i had a hard time trying to maintain separation from him.
I guess luck was on my side. Despite having a few hiccups here and there, the Senior Instructor that took off with me gave me a full pass for my Pcheck. Lucky...extremely lucky!
I passed......
*Guess wat, the aircraft tail no that i flew today was VH-LTK! The same aircraft i used when i cleared my first solo flight!
Signing out~ Sortie 133 and 136 - Basic Instrument FlyingIn order for us to be given a total of 15 solo hrs between each dual flight, we need to clock at least 1hr worth of flying time under IF condition. That is to say, instead of having visual references thru the cockpit windscreen, we are suppose to fly the aircraft using only cockpit instruments. Phase 2; Sortie 133 and 136 are catered into our training plan for this sole reason. Extensive instrument flying will be done during Phase 3 of our training.
Sortie 133
I did my sortie 133 on 1st december. This is my first instrument flight with my instructor. Overall was smooth and the flight was perform pretty much up to standard. Got a bit disorientated due to leans half an hr into the flight. But all went off oki...managed to clear the sortie.
Sortie 136
Sortie 136 was flown on 06th december. The main difference between this sortie and sortie 133 is that i need to fly the aircraft under vacuum pump failure conditions. That is to say, i lost both my artificial horizon and DGI in the cockpit. They were covered up by my instructor and i could no longer draw any reference from either of them. Bad...horrible..it's not a condition you will want to get yourself into if you are flying a plane. Losing both the DGI and AH made simple task like flying straight and level doubly hard, and not to say...i am expected to recover from unusual attitude that my instructor pulled on me. Extremely challenging i must say...
The stupid thing that i did is that i didn't take my lunch before the flight. Half way during the flight, due to the G-forces that my instructor pulled on me for UA, i just felt like vomitting. Horrible...
Overall, i managed to clear the sortie...it sure was an experience.
Signing out~ November 25 On my way to P1 CheckClear for take off!
Sortie 122 - Circuit Solo
Sortie 122s is a circuit solo sortie and was done on 06/11/2007. Take off time was 09:30 hrs and flight time was an hr. Just a normal circuit session, nothing interesting also.
Sortie 119, 116A, 119A - Dual GH Solo Check
Was scheduled to fly Sortie 119 GH check on 07/11/2007. Sortie 119 was a total disaster for me. i was complacent and didn't get the procedures correct and almost busted into controlled airspace. Failed the sortie immediately...pathetic. was made to go back to do my sortie 116 with my Grade 3 instructor before attempting 119A with my Senior Instructor again. so i did my 116A on 08/11/2007 before going back to do 119A on 12/11/2007 which i managed to clear on the second attempt. Clear for Solo GH sorties!
Sortie 120 & Sortie 121 - GH Solo
First time going into the training area alone. Just did simple stuff like normal turns...a couple of steep turns and get use to flying around in the training area alone. Quite fun and the workload compared to flying in the circuits is lesser. Sortie 121, my second solo GH sortie. slightly more comfortable with flying alone in the training area, so managed to do a couple of PFLs and steep turns before making my way back to Jandakot Airport.
Sortie 123 & Sortie 123A- Circuit Dual
My P1 check are drawing near. Sortie 123 was suppose to be my last dual circuit flight with my instructor. but my instructor decided to alpha my sortie 123 becoz he felt that i needed more practise on my landing as i still have a tendency to land too flat resulting in a hard landing.
Sortie 124, 127 - More solo Flights
After completing sortie 123, i carried on and booked myself in for sortie 124 (circuit solo) and 127 (GH solo). Nothing special...just fly and clock my hrs for my P1 check.
Sortie 126, 126A, 111A
Sortie 126 is designed as a Pre P1 check sortie. which is to say, by this time, i should be up to P1 check standard. But unfortunately, that's not the case. i have to do sortie 126A and there after, another hr worth of circuit dual (sortie 111A) becoz my instructor felt that i wasn't ready for P1 check yet. But having flown all these sorties, my instructor finally believe that i am up to P1 check standard and decided to recommend me for P1 check. Phewww...
Sortie 125, 128, 129 - Solo Flights
In order to sign up for P1 check, i have to complete all my remaining solo sorties which were 125 circuits, 129 circuits and 128 GH. So...over the weekend, i planned myself in for all 3 flights and the weather was kind enough for me to fly all 3 of them. heh...P1 check here i come!
Signing out~ November 13 Sortie 119, Sortie 116A and Sortie 119A - GH Solo checkSometime last week, i was put up for Sortie 119. Sortie 119 is GH solo check, whereby the instructor will assess you on the outbound and inbound procedures. Whether you can go out to the training area and back safely without infringing into control airspace is vito to pass this sortie.
For the benefit of those who doesn't have ant idea how the flights are categorised, here's a list of flights that we do here in Jandakot:
Up to this stage, i can only do solo circuit flights and clearing sortie 119 will allow me to fly GH solo flights. But guess wat, i screwed up big time for my Sortie 119. When going outbound from Jandakot airport, i almost entered control airspace coz i initiated a climb to 3500ft before water ski park. Immediately my instructor asked me wat's the height that i am suppose to climb to. Instead of giving the correct height of 2500ft, i gave 3500ft. Busted...totally...the instructor took control of the aircraft and failed my sortie immediately. haiz...then i was told to go back to do my sortie 116A. haiz...sad day... So i put myself up for sortie 116A with my grade 3 instructor. The flight was oki...pretty fun. Did a couple of stalls, unusual attitude recovery and PFLs. PFLs still need to be brushed up...abit lost when my instructor pulled the aircraft throttle to simulated engine failure. On Monday 12/11/2007, i was put up for sortie 119A again with the Senior Instructor. Keeping fingers crossed...i went out to the training area and back. The horrible thing tat i heard over the ATIS when doing inbound was that the cross wind was max at 22kts and i was only rated for max 10kts of cross wind landing. luckily, i have the SI sitting on my right...hahaha...landed. passed...finally, cleared to do my GH solo flights! Signing out~ October 30 Sortie 117 and 118 - Circuits SoloBoth sortie 117 and sortie 118 are circuit solo, each worth 1hr of air time. It's the same as the previous solo circuit sorties so there aint much for me to talk about either. Perhaps just that small point tat i attempted to come in with a flapless approach for one of the touch-and-go for sortie 118. Still alive here to fly another day!
Signing out~ October 27 Sortie 116 - PFL and Steep TurnsIt had been quite a long while since i went back to the training area for general handling training. The previous GH training was back in sortie 104. Sortie 105 to 115 had all been circuit training sorties for us to get the hang of making safe landings. A bit rusty in making my departure and inbound procedures to/from the training area, but i am glad that my tiny brain had been functioning well after a little help from my instructor who was onbound with me for the 1 and 1/2 half flight.
Requirements for Sortie 116 are Practise Force Landing (PFL and not PLF) and steep turns (45 angle of bank). For you folks out there, hahaha...force landing is perhaps the last thing that you will ever want to hear when onboard. The same goes for me...losing your engine in the sky is no fun especially when you don't have much altitude to play with. As much as you will panic, the crew in the cockpit are pretty much feeling the same. Hence the need for us to learn how to troubleshoot and attempt to restart the engine. In other words, please trust the pilots when situation like this happen. hahaha...the pilots will be doing their best to make everyone stay alive.
Not until now, i have only been executing turns up to a max of 30degree. Steep turns are basically the same, just that you are increasing the turn to 45degrees AOB. With the increase, aerodynamic forces on the wings will also be increased. Hence the need to play with power settings when entering and rolling out from a steep turn. Also, the crew will be experiencing an increase in G force to 1.5G. Quite fun if you execute the turn properly and definately not fun if you end up nose diving the aircraft. hahaha...which i think happened to me for some of the turns.
All in all, sortie 116 was performed up to standard and i managed to clear it.
Signing out~ October 26 Sortie 114 and 115 - Circuits SoloSortie 114 - Circuits Solo
After clearing my solo check in sortie 113, the weather had been stopping me from going for my solo circuit sorties. pathetic. Finally, sortie 114 - circuit solo was flown on 22st Monday late afternoon. I went up when the ATIS reported a max 10kts crosswind. Runway 24L was in used at that time. Did a total of 4 touch-and-go plus 1 full stop for the sortie.
The full stop landing could be made better if i had not been indecisive with whether to go around after the aircraft ballooned. Overall not a very good session as most of the landings made, the aircraft ballooned.
Sortie 115 - Circuit Solo
After i completed my sortie 114, i sign up for sortie 115 - circuits solo. The sortie was flown on the early morning of 24th, Wednesday. The session was fun as LP was following behind me throughout the circuit session. muahahhaa...he heard my RT calls and vice versa. After the session, he was able to tell me how screwed up my circuit pattern was.
Overall session was a fruitfull one as i was able to correct the mistakes that i made in sortie 114. The landings made throughout the sessions were pretty smooth and safe.
Signing out~
October 17 Sortie 113A - Final Solo CheckBase on the forecast, the weather is uber bad for flying today. Expected high winds and showers. Despite the marginal weather, the flight took off at 09:45hrs. ATA 10:45 hrs, 1 hr worth of air time. Sortie 113 is the final circuit solo check before i can start planning for my own circuit solo flights. It's also the sortie that we need to get our crosswind landing rating. Below are my debrief points:
Debrief for Sortie 113A – Tan Yang Beng Sortie Details: Sortie 113A Circuits, 4 + 1 Duration: 1hr Flight Schedule: ATD 09:45 ETA: 10:45
The full stop landing was done with crosswind of 14kts coming from the starboard. oh manz...i never wana land the plane with that kinda wind using a cessna again. if feels like you are crashing the plane onto the runway. really strange attitude! but i survived to fly another day. crosswind rating received: 10kts
Signing out~ October 14 Final Circuit Solo Check - Sortie 113Debrief for Sortie 113 – Tan Yang Beng Sortie Details: Sortie 113 Circuits, 5 + 1 Duration: 1hr Flight Schedule: ATD 14:20 ETA: 15:20
In this sortie, i performed a performance take off and short field landing. The take off was oki...but the landing was uber exciting. hahaha...i thought my aircraft aint gonna make it to the runway, but luckily, it did.
I didn't manage to clear my circuit solo check with my instructor. The required standard has been raised and i didn't make the cut. Flying sortie 113A tomorrow again. Hopefully i can clear the check this time round.
Clear sky...signing out~ October 06 Second Solo Check - Sortie 111 and 112sSortie 111 was scheduled on 051200hrs, Friday. It's the second round of solo check with my instructor. After clearing my first solo flight 4 days ago, i still feel the slight uneasiness.
Prop clear and the engine was cranked 5 mins after 1200hrs. Instead of the usual runway 24L for circuits, runway 06R was in operation. Perhaps it's due to this that i felt slight unease for the flight. Non the less, i took off 15mins after 1200hrs.
The first circuit was done using runway 06R. But as i came in for my approach, the ATC coms,
"BZX there will be a runway change from 06R to 24L, clear to land, continue rolling down runway 06R to end of runway 24L and clear for take off for 24L."
This is like the longest RT call i ever received. Luckily my instructor was onboard and he handed the calls. I just had to fly the plane. Touched down and took off from runway 24L and i continued with another 2+1 before my instructor decided to step out of the aircraft and sent me back for sortie 112, solo.
I was planning to do a 2 + 1 for my sortie 112s but again, for my full stop landing, i was complacent and didn't control the rudder properly. The aircraft yawed left and almost went into the grass. I initiated a go-around and was successful for my second attempt. haiz...i need to be more careful next time.
Signing out~ October 02 First Solo - Sortie 109 and 110After 17hrs worth of air time, finally the day had come when i am going for my first solo. For those who are in the aviation industry, you will probably have a good idea of the mix feelings that i had yesterday. my flight was scheduled at 1300hrs.
Sortie 109: Took off time was 1240hrs, and i was told by my instructor that i have to clear my first solo today. my hours are running up. flew in the circuits with my instructor; completed 4 + 1. Landed to drop my instructor off at the engine run up bay and he sent me up again for sortie 110s.
Sortie 110s: Took off again from Runway 24L at 1340hrs. climb, turn crosswind, then turn downwind...base league all was oki. Approach and finals were oki too, until the last moment. i flared the aircraft coming in for landing. but the airplane bounced and i lost control. i gave up the landing and inititated a go-around. Flew another run in the circuits before getting down to finals again.
By this time, cold sweat was already breaking out. again i flared the aircraft coming in for landing after crossing the threshold of the runway. the plane bounced abit but this time round, i was able to control the aircraft. airplane landed at 1400hrs, first solo completed. pheww....finally...
and this was wat happened next.
Signing out~ October 01 Sortie 108F & Sortie 108GDebrief for Sortie 108F – Tan Yang Beng Sortie Details: Sortie 108F Circuits, 5 + 1 Duration: 1hr Flight Schedule: ATD 16:00 ETA: 17:00
